19 c. Pierced Sandstone Jali
Specimen pierced window screen, also known as a jali, circa 1850. Hand carved from sandstone, the openwork and geometric patterns are characteristically Mogul and have a natural appeal. Originally used to filter light, ventilate and provide privacy; today, the creative design possibilities for this architectural artifact abound.
